I have sciatica pain, will trying to use my elliptical trainer make it worse?

have had some pretty horrible sciatica pain for abou 6 weeks now, I use Ice and advil, the pain isnt as severe the last couple of days. I want to exercise but should I use an elliptical trainer?

Every now and then I get a pain on my left side, starting at my lower back and shooting down. It’s not excruciating or anything; I can deal with it. It will usually be painful for a few days and then go away. Then it will come back a few months later. This has probably happened about 3 or 4 times over the past year. Am I doing permanent damage to myself or making it worse by not having it checked by a doctor? Or is it okay if I just wait until my next normal checkup to discuss it with my doctor?
